Former Redstone official sentenced for bribery

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A former high-level official with the
U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command at Redstone Arsenal in
Huntsville has been sentenced to federal prison for taking $1.6
million in bribes.
U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn sentenced
54-year-old Michael L. Cantrell of Huntsville to five years in
prison on Wednesday. Cantrell is former director of the Integrated
Capabilities Management Directorate at Redstone.
Cantrell pleaded guilty in 2008 to conspiracy to commit bribery,
bribery, and tax evasion. He was accused of taking the bribes in
exchange for giving preference to certain contractors.
Blackburn ordered Cantrell to pay the government $2.5 million in
restitution and directed him to pay $352,145 in back taxes to the
Internal Revenue Service.
