AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - A statewide poll by Auburn University's
Center for Government Studies indicates many Alabama residents
could be going hungry because of the recession.
The survey found that 27 percent believe that "a lot" of
Alabama families are cutting meal sizes or skipping meals because
of financial problems. Another 36 percent said a "fair number"
are doing the same.
Auburn pollster David Hill said the survey didn't ask people
directly whether they had cut back because people would be
reluctant to say they are going hungry. He said asking indirectly
provides a sense of what people are hearing from friends and
neighbors.
The random survey of 639 adults was conducted July 6-19. It has
a sampling error margin of plus or minus four percentage points.
