Alabama health officials say routine testing for the swine virus is no longer necesarry because patients with flu-like symptoms most likely have swine flu.
State Health Officer Dr. Don Williamson said Friday that the department is now looking for changes in the virus instead of focusing on the number of cases in the state.
Williams said they are putting in place a statewide system where the department will receive samples from each county every week.
He said the state lab's limited capacity means that the agency is restricting testing to hospitalized patients, pregnant women and certain others.
More than 99 percent of all samples tested during the past four weeks were positive for swine flu.
