Focusing on jefferson county schools, out of 52 schools, eight did not make the "No Child Left Behind" standards. The good news... for the second year in a row Erwin Elementary is off the school improvement list. The bad news... for the fourth year in a row... Minor High School failed to make AYP.
It's registration day for Minor High School seniors and juniors. As staff get students ready for the new school year, they're learning their school didn't make a-y-p for the fourth year in a row.
Minor High School Principal David Pike said, "We're a little disappointed, graduation rate went up from 74% to 83%, which was a big improvement, but we're still lacking in a couple of areas, especially reading."
While they're disappointed at Minor, there will be punch and cake for returning staff at Erwin Elementary which for the second year in a row is off the school improvement list, because it met it's AYP goals. The school's principal credits in-class staff development plus before and after school tutoring with bringing students up to speed.
Erwin Elementary Principal Mike Barlow said, "We have a significant number of kids that are not on the grade level they should be so there's a lot of tutorial work that's needed."
Back at Minor, Pike hopes to conquer AYP by offering staff development, who in turn will have to work directly with students in the area of reading... a major problem area.
Pike said, "Most of our teachers are trained subject oriented matter. We have to train, math or history teachers to teach reading. so it's work in progress."
It’s a work in progress towards goals that will only get harder in the future.
Jefferson County had only one title one school that did not make AYP. That was Warrior Elementary.
These are other Jefferson County schools that did not make AYP:
Hueytown, Erwin, Fultondale and Pinson Valley high schools, also Burkett Center and Rudd Middle Schools, as well as Warrior Elementary.
