Fatalities during the Take Back Our Highways campaign in Alabama have decreased from a year ago.
According to information from the Alabama State Troopers, the week-long traffic safety campaign ended with Alabama troopers responding to 575 crashes, resulting in 259 injuries and 11 deaths.
During the same period in 2008, troopers reported 580 crashes, 237 injuries and 18 fatalities.
The 11 trooper-reported fatalities took place in Lauderdale, Limestone, Baldwin, Choctaw, Dale, Marshall, Calhoun, Colbert, Covington, Lee and St. Clair counties.
According to preliminary reports, at least three of the deaths were alcohol related, and six of the nine vehicle occupants were not using safety restraints. (Two of the crash victims were motorcyclists.)
Trooper enforcement totals for the period include 16,054 traffic violations cited, including 185 for DUI, 7,657 for speeding, and 2,862 seat belt/child restraint tickets.
Troopers also made 335 non-traffic arrests, and they recorded 530 motorist assists.
