Jefferson County’s School Board will tour three high schools: Corner, Plesant Grove and Hueytown; Brighton k through 8 and Minor Community Elementary School.
Minor Community Elementary School is a Title one school, meaning a majority of its students receive free or reduced lunch. Their big move to their new building is exciting not just for students and staff but for the community as well.
Inside this 3rd grade classroom at Minor Elementary you'll find decrepit conditions in this World War II era school building. Stained ceiling tiles inside are from a leaky roof outside and there's more.
Third Grade Teacher, Meladye Payne said, "If you come in and look around our facility now, the ceiling tiles are covered from where there've been leaks, the restroom doors are barely hanging on."
But students and staff won't have to bare this burden much longer, that's because their new building is almost ready. The new Minor Community Elementary School is just another example of the penny tax being put to great use. This 14 and a half million dollar building will soon be open to its nearly 400 students. This new building is also having a positive effect on the community.
PTA President Jaquawna Williams said, "This is going to be good for the neighborhood, it's going to bring up our value of our property, just all around, it's going to be great for our community and the neighborhood."
Minor's new building will all be state of the art.
Payne said, "We're going to have brand new Promethean boards in every room, brand new cabinet, everything's brand spankin new."
Depending on permits and inspections, students and staff could be moved into the new building before the school year ends at the end of May.
