For 67 years The Anchorage restaurant has served hungry patrons at the same location near what used to be called “the curve”. But today the restaurant closed for the last time after the owner says the landlord refused to renew his lease.
Many of today's customers have eaten here for more than four decades. Longtime customer Walter Busenlehner says, “You see the same people every morning a lot of politics have been discussed in here over the years it's just a place you can come and enjoy, never had bad food. I just hate to see them go.”
Buddy Wade has been eating at The Anchorage for 40 years and appreciates it’s friendly atmosphere. He says, “My wife doesn't like to come here as much as I do because when I get here I usually spend two hours before I can get out.”
“It's just like a club, you get the same people coming in you learn their name and know what they want to eat and just enjoy the camaraderie of being around people”, says owner Denton Scott.
Some call it a country club without the country club atmosphere. If that's the case then Linda Baker would be a founding member. She's waited tables at The Anchorage for 26 years and knows most of her longtime customers by their orders, not necessarily their names.
Wade says, “Linda will tell you as quick as anything, two scrambled grits and biscuits and unsweet tea every day.”
“Of course I miss (mu customers) already, don't make me cry!” says Baker. “Because it is like a little family. You get up in the morning time you know what you're going to do, you know who you're going to see, and just about what time I’m going to see them.”
Baker says she doesn't know what she'll do next, she had hoped to work ten more years at the anchorage then retire. Now she and the 10 other employees will be job hunting instead.
Anchorage patrons say they'll be a little lost without their old familiar hangout. They say there are plenty of good eateries in town, but none quite like The Anchorage.
Scott says he's putting all the restaurant's furnishings in storage in hopes of one day perhaps resurrecting The Anchorage.
