Fifteen Lakeshore Foundation athletes traveled to Beijing, China to compete in the 2008 Paralympic Games and they returned home with a total of seven medals.
Cyclist Jennifer Schuble of Homewood brought back three medals. She won gold and set a new world record in the women's 500 meter trial, CP4 classification. She went on to win silver in both the CP4 individual pursuit and women's road cycling time trial.
The U.S. Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team, including the University of Alabama's Mary Allison Milford, Alana Nichols and Stephanie Wheeler, captured gold after a 50 - 38 victory over Germany.
After a disappointing third place finish in Athens four years ago, the U.S. Men's Wheelchair Rugby Team reclaimed gold in Beijing. Team co-captian Bryan Kirkland of Leeds and newcomer Joel Wilmoth of Hueytown, were proud to represent Team USA and Lakeshore Foundation.
Lakeshore's Jen Armbruster led the U.S. Womens Goalball Team to victory with a gold metal. Armbruster, who is a recreation specialist at Lakeshore Foundation, was also selectd as flag bearer for the U.S. Team in the opening ceremonies.
In her fifth Paralympic Games, Lakeshore Foundation's Aimee Bruder took bronze in the women's 100 meter freestyle.
