CLANTON – Alabama is taking in thousands of Louisiana residents who have fled Hurricane Gustav.
“Alabama is compassionately providing a safe refuge from the storm for our neighbors. Even though Alabama has also suffered because of this hurricane, we have taken the lead in reaching out to those in need,” said Governor Bob Riley. “The quarters may be cramped because we are accepting so many evacuees from out-of-state, but we will continue to provide safety for our neighbors and make them as comfortable as possible.”
At this time, Alabama has 64 shelters across the state housing evacuees. The total number of evacuees in those shelters at this time is estimated to be at least 8,984.
