BIRMINGHAM, Ala--When the economy slumps so does charitable giving.
Right now the Salvation Army is down about $150,000 compared to this time last year.

The non-profit reports that since the cost of food has risen they've seen more people come in looking for a hot meal. Pain at the pump for drivers is squeezing the wallets of so many. The director, Tree Davidson said people who would normally donate may not have much left to give.

People at the Jimmy Hale Mission compare non-profits to retail stores, in the fourth quarter the bulk of donations are given. They are hoping it will turn around.
