Police are bolstering security on subways and trains
after a government warning that al-Qaida suicide bombers
have been contemplating a holiday season attack on New York area
mass transit.

An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press says the FBI
has received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that
al-Qaida terrorists may have discussed the attack in late
September.

A person briefed on the matter says the threat may also be
directed at the passenger rail lines running through New York, such
as Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road. They are particularly busy
with Thanksgiving travelers.

A federal law enforcement official says there's no indication
that anyone involved in the planning is in the United States. And
the warning says the government has no details that would confirm
that the plot has gone beyond "aspirational planning."
