A grand jury has decided against bringing criminal charges
in the death of an inmate whose family is
suing the state over his treatment in a state prison.

The Montgomery County district attorney's office said Wednesday
a panel decided there was no probable cause to indicate a crime
occurred in the death of Farron Barksdale.

The 32-year-old man was convicted of killing two Athens police
officers in 2004, and he died in state custody last year. His
family has sued the state in federal court alleging he was denied
proper medical treatment.

The state denies Barksdale was mistreated in any way, but it is
fighting a judge's order to release its investigation of the death.
