Talladega Superspeedway was the scene this weekend for the biggest scouting event in the USA this year.
Some 10,000 people attended the 2008 Talladega Encampment. Many camped in the infield of the famous racetrack. Others who chose not to brave the clear but cool night on Friday came out for the day on Saturday.
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and others participated in numerous activities including pedal car racing, tomahawk throwing, b-b-gun target shooting, branding, and blacksmithing.
Native American dancers and drummers performed Saturday afternoon.
Scouts and their families were also treated to a stage show Saturday night which featured a Blues Brothers tribute singing group. NBC 13 HD News Anchor Mike Royer served as emcee for the stage show and even got into the act briefly during one song by "Jake & Elwood".
Saturday night culminated with a fireworks display.
Worship services were scheduled for Sunday.
The 2008 gathering is the third such scout camp of its kind to be held at the Talladega Superspeedway. Scouts from across the Southeast attended the event.
