Marine Police Urge Boat Safety Over Holiday Weekend

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Marine Police urges boaters to follow water safety rules over the three-day Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

Officers plan to conduct saturation patrols and checkpoints on the state's waterways looking for individuals impaired by alcohol.

In Alabama, the first offense for BUI can be anywhere from $600 to $2,000 -- and up to one year in jail.

State law also requires children under eight years of age to wear life vests.

Here are a few safe boating tips:

- Always wear a life jacket
- Don't drink and boat

- Keep a fully charged fire extinguisher

- Make sure your navigating lights work before dark

- Tell someone where you are going in the boat

The Memorial Day Weekend is considered the start of the summer season.
