DECATUR, Ala. (AP) -- Graduates at north Alabama high school took time to remember a pregnant teacher who collapsed at school and died just hours before the ceremony.
Austin High School in Decatur held a moment of silence in memory of 37-year-old Kym Chambers at the beginning of its graduation ceremony Thursday night.
Chambers was an English teacher who spent part of her career helping struggling students. She was 7½ months pregnant.
But Chambers collapsed just as final exams ended, and she died later at a hospital. Her unborn baby couldn't be saved.
Superintendent Sam Houston says Chambers had a possible aneurysm and a ruptured spleen. She is survived by a husband and a daughter who just completed the fifth grade.
