ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) -- The federal report on a fatal plane crash in Randolph County shows both pilots had experienced lack of sleep before the crash.

The latest finding reported Friday by The Anniston Star also describes damage to the plane and notes that the force of the impact sent the engine 4 feet into the ground.

Flight instructor 28-year-old Emily Clark of Madison and student pilot 37-year-old James Brown of Huntsville died December 7 when the 1978 single-engine Cessna they were flying crashed in the Bethel East community near Sewell.

The latest report shows both had been awake for 20 hours at the time of the crash.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Corky Smith compiled the report. It has been sent to the NTSB in Washington, which will make a final judgment about the probable cause of the crash.
