GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) -- Gulf Shores has hired 16 lifeguards for the summer season, which generally runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
Gulf Shores Parks and Recreation Director Harold Samples says eight lifeguards will be stationed at the main public beach on the half-mile stretch at the base of Ala. 59 each day from about 8 a.m. until dark.
His best advice for the thousands of visitors who will arrive for the Memorial Day weekend is to swim where lifeguards are stationed.
Last Memorial Day weekend, two men drowned on consecutive days just east of Gulf Shores' main public beach, which is patrolled by lifeguards day and night.
The Gulf State Park Pavilion also usually is manned by lifeguards during the summer. Assistant Superintendent Trey Myers says two to five lifeguards are on duty most days.
