»  Comments | Post a Comment

BESSEMER, Ala--The number displayed on your caller ID box may not be legit. Bessemer police warn scheme artist can change your caller ID screen through the click of a button. It’s happened to one Bessemer man. A caller posing as a police detective asked for personal information over the phone. “He answered his phone it said Bessemer police but they asked him questions and it just didn't sound right so he came down and talked to us in person,” Detective B. McKisson said. The detective who called him doesn't exist. The caller posing as a detective was using a Microsoft based program bought on the internet, to change the real number on the screen. Most people are not aware of the new phone scheme. Police advice when in doubt hang up and call the number back.
