BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) -- Bessemer Police said a scam artist aided by a new device has used the department's phone number in a scheme to steal personal banking information from unwary citizens.
Authorities were alerted about the scam on Tuesday.
A citizen stated that he had received a call from an individual who claimed to be a police detective conducting an investigation. The citizen who filed the complaint stated that his Caller ID showed the Bessemer Police phone line 205-425-2411.
Police confirmed it happened and said the swindler did not get any information.
Authorities said they learned that there is a device on the market that would allow a caller to input a telephone number in which he or she would like the receiving caller to see.
