BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama state troopers plan increased patrols on roads during the 72-hour Memorial Day weekend.

The holiday runs through midnight May 26.

Police and state troopers will launch highway blitzes on Monday in Jefferson and Shelby counties, including checkpoints, road blocks and extra traffic patrols that will run through the end of May.

State troopers plan similar increased patrols along major thoroughfares throughout the month.

The concentrated patrols are planned as part of the Click it or Ticket campaign.

In Jefferson County, extra patrols are scheduled along Interstates 65 and 459, and U.S. 31 in Fultondale, Morris and Warrior. Patrols in Shelby County are scheduled along U.S. 280 and Alabama routes 25, 31 and 70. Road blocks and checkpoints will be set up to look for intoxicated drivers and seat belt use.
