Auburn University displayed state-of-the-art biofuel technology at the Alabama Power headquarters in downtown Birmingham on Thursday.
The university’s traveling trailer was equipped with technology that converts wood chips and other forest debris into electricity for homes or gasoline for cars.
Auburn researchers say the wood chip biofuel burns cleaner than the alternatives. At least a dozen Alabama cities are looking at ways to bring the technology to their communities to generate a new, less expensive fuel.
Alabama Power officials also are considering the wood chip biofuel as a future alternative energy source, though a similar form of the biofuel is already being generated by Alabama Power in limited quantities.
