LINCOLN, Ala. (AP) -- Federal authorities have started a short-term cleanup at the Lincoln Metals site in Lincoln.
The Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement the action is meant to stabilize the site and remove any hazards to human health and the environment. It was started Monday and could take up to three months. The cost is estimated at about $2.5 million.
The site is an inactive brass foundry that operated in Lincoln from 1956 to 2001.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management requested that the site be considered for an immediate federal response in August 2006.
EPA assessments at the site in 2007 revealed lead contamination in the soil above EPA's removal action levels. Because of the direct threat of potential contact with contaminated soils, a removal action was approved in March.
