BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A Pinson man who police say was driving a van that struck and killed a 14-year-old boy in 2005 has pleaded guilty to a felony in connection with the teen's death.

Fifty-seven-year-old Frederick Cunningham pleaded guilty Monday in Birmingham to leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injuries.

Authorities say Michael Blake Hand was skateboarding with friends on December 29th, 2005, when he was struck by a van.

Cunningham lived near the road where the boy was killed and had been scheduled to stand trial this week. Circuit Judge Virginia Vinson has not set a sentencing date.

His attorney, John Charles Robbins, called the accident "a tragedy for both sides." The charge carries a sentence of 1 to 10 years but Cunningham also may ask for probation.
