Homewood, Ala-- There was never really a security threat on Samford's campus. Homewood police said a Samford safety officer made up a story about a gunman being spotted on campus Friday. Around 5:30 a.m. Friday, the officer reported seeing a man with a gun near the north side of campus. School officials locked down the dorms and began a two-hour search of the campus. Students and faculty were alerted of the alleged threat through text messages and e-mails. When Homewood police questioned the safety officer he admitted it was a hoax. Officials at Samford stress they acted on information they thought was credible, but say the false threat proves security measures in place are effective. Meanwhile the safety officer involved faces disciplinary action.
