ROANOKE, Ala. (AP) -- The embattled mayor of Roanoke has resigned from office for violating the state ethics law. Henry "Spec" Bonner will pay restitution to the city and serve two years of probation.
The agreement was announced Thursday by the Alabama Attorney General's office.
The 73-year-old Bonner was arrested in January on a 26-count indictment that charged him with using his position for personal gain and violating the state's competitive-bid law.
Prosecutors alleged that he diverted more than $86,000 of the city's fuel contracts to a business where he served as president and part owner.
City Council chairman Richard Fetner will serve as the mayor.
