Two West Alabama Postal Workers Charged With Stealing Mail

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Two West Alabama postal workers have been indicted on charges that they stole mail.
 
U.S. Attorney Alice Martin says Rebecca Johnston and Tommie Smith have been indicted in two separate cases.
 
Johnston, of Centre, was charged in a four-count indictment alleging that she stole mail on three occasions and also tried to persuade one of her victims to lie on her behalf if questioned about missing mail.
 
If convicted, she faces five years in prison and a $250 thousand dollar fine for each mail theft count, and 20 years in prison and a $250 thousand dollar fine if convicted of witness tampering.
 
Smith, of Tuscaloosa, was charged in an 18 count indictment alleging that he stole CDs and DVDs that were being sent through the mail.
 
If convicted, he faces five years in prison and a $250 thousand fine for each count of mail theft.
