Saving on gas by moving closer to work... it's one way drivers are saving money. It could mean saving a couple hundred dollars for some drivers by moving closer to their jobs.
Phones are ringing off the hook at Select My Space, a leasing agency on Birmingham's Southside. Clint DeShazo is the director of leasing.
"Right now is a good time to look," DeShazo said.
June and July are busy months for Select My Space because of UAB. This is the time students and newly hired professionals are looking for places to live. But now Clint says Select My Space is serving a different kind of client: those who want to save on gas.
"So I want to move into town, spend a little more on rent, to be closer to work.'”, DeShazo said of his clients. “That's the trend, especially with gas prices the way they are."
Near $4-a-gallon gas is helping drivers to think creatively about how to cut down on costs. If drivers can save a couple hundred bucks by moving closer to their jobs, they're making the move. Some are even keeping their place out of town and renting a second place in town.
"Just recently in the last few weeks, people are saying, people that are commuting in from out of town, they want a place here during the week, because gas is so high,” said Steve Watkins of Historic Properties.
Watkins also says now is the time to rent -- apartments are still reasonable and there's plenty of product available. One bedrooms on Southside range from$ 500 to $750 per month. Two bedrooms are $600 to $850 per month.
