BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama-grown tomatoes are safe to eat, so says state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks. He said in a statement Monday that the Food and Drug Administration placed Alabama tomatoes on the "safe to eat" list.

A growing number of restaurant chains and stores are stopping sales of some raw tomatoes because of salmonella fears. The warning involves only certain types, including red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes unless they were grown in certain states or countries.

Agriculture officials also said the harvest season for Alabama tomatoes has begun and they expect the state's supply to be in high demand.
