Clean-up Plan Could Help Habitat, Fight Crime

BIRMINGHAM, Ala -- A neighborhood clean up program in Birmingham could help the needy and help fight crime, according to Mayor Larry Langford.

He announced a plan to demolish hundreds of abandoned homes and buildings and possibly turn the empty lots over to Habitat for Humanity, a charity group which builds homes for the needy.

The group says they could eventually put up hundreds of news homes and need lots in the Birmingham city limits.

Langford says the program would also help fight crime.

“If we're going to fight crime in this city, we’ve got to eliminate some of the crime areas in here. Dilapidated houses are certainly one of them," Langford said.

Langford says he'll set a one year time frame to demolish condemned properties.

City council members want local wrecking companies to donate services to help cut down the estimated four million dollar price tag.
