In Tuscaloosa County, residents are concerned a sewer dispute could delay the opening of a brand new elementary school.
Ground was broken on Lake View Elementary school in October 2006. The $13 million building is scheduled to welcome students Aug. 7.
Teachers are expected to report to Lake View Elementary in Eastern Tuscaloosa County August 4. But we now know there are problems to be worked out between Tuscaloosa County Schools and the community of Lake View over sewer hook-up to the school.
This elementary school building has been under construction for nearly two years. More than 500 students are expected to transfer from Brookwood and Vance elementary schools.
At issue is whether the school will have sewer hook-up by the time the school opens. Officials with both the county school system and the city of Lake View agree there are some problems, but wouldn't be more specific.
"There has been some concern about some of the issues as far as the school is concerned primarily it has to do with the sewer,” said John Merrill of the Tuscaloosa County Schools. “The fact that sewer obligation is in question from the town of Lake View. But we can assure you that this school will open on time."
Mike White, a Lake View city official, said the city will provide the school sewer, but said "issues still need to be worked out."
And Lake View's mayor, Fred Pugh, said he's "doing everything in his power" and that "Lake View Public Sewer will be able to serve the school."
By the way, Lake View is one of three schools built with the Tuscaloosa County 1-cent sales tax. Northport Elementary and Duncanville Middle are the others.
