MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Gov. Bob Riley met with business officials in Santiago, Chile, hoping to attract business for Mobile's new container terminal.
Riley met Wednesday with Fernando Valenzuela, a senior vice president with CSAV, a worldwide shipping company based in Chile.
The company owns 109 container vessels and more than 270,000 containers. Valenzuela told Riley he expects container shipments at U.S. Gulf Coast ports to increase by more than a million containers a year by 2009.
Riley asked company officials to consider using the new container facility at Mobile when delivering containers to the United States. He said the Port of Mobile is an ideal place for shipments to enter the country because shipments can be transported on Interstate 65 to the midwest and Canada.
