BIRMINGHAM, Ala- Mayor Larry Langford wants $200,000 to expand a community policing program, now that federal grant money is running out. If the mayor has his way Weed and Seed, which currently exists in three Birmingham neighborhoods would expand to 96 other communities. Since the grant money will run out at the end of June, the mayor said the money will come from a surplus from the general budget. The idea is to use police and community cooperation to prevent crime, but developing a city wide program with a limited budget is a challenge. "Mayor Langford is a magician at finding funds where they need to be found," Sergeant Dexter Cunningham said. Police and neighborhood presidents met for a four-hour retreat Wednesday to plan the launching of the program. The community policing program has been in place for five years in the Druid Hills, Park Place and Norwood communities. Organizers want to sustain the three existing programs and start on Birmingham’s Eastside this fall.
