BIRMINGHAM, Ala---It won’t kill you to slow down. That's a message from Alabama State Troopers. You may have seen the electronic billboards on I- 20 or I-459 this weekend. The reminders are a part of the state trooper blitz. They are out in full force reminding people to travel safely.
Troopers have check points throughout the state and are using LIDAR to detect speeds with radar. Last year at this time more than half of the nine fatalities involved alcohol. Troopers are certainly looking for impaired drivers through the Task Force Zero DUI enforcement teams.
Alabama State Trooper, David Richards said they will target aggressive drivers. " We view aggressive driving as speeding, improper lane changes and following to close," Richards said.
These initiatives definitely work as there have been 78 fewer fatalities since this time last year. The independence travel period ends at midnight Monday morning. NBC will certainly give you the traffic report when it becomes available.
