CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Pres. Bush's final Fourth of July as president has been marred by protesters who called for his impeachment during a naturalization ceremony where Bush welcomed new American citizens.
Bush brushed off the shouts at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's historic Virginia home.
"We believe in free speech in the United States of America." said Bush to the disturbance.
Some 150 or so demonstrators opposing the war in Iraq also rallied along the path of the president's motorcade to the ceremony.
"We pay tribute to the brave men and women who wear the uniform." said Pres. Bush.
Bush did not mention Iraq during the speech.
"Have inspired immigrants around the world to set sail to our shores." said Pres. Bush on the words of the Declaration of Independence.
Bush evoked Jefferson's words in the Declaration of Independence during his remarks to the new citizens.
