Alabama soldier killed in Iraq

A soldier from Northeast Alabama is among the latest U.S. casualties in Iraq.

WASHINGTON: The Department of Defense says an Alabama Soldier has died while serving in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Jonathan W. Dean, 25, of Valley Head, Alabama, died Dec. 20, in Bayji, Iraq. The military classifies his death as a non-combat related incident in Tikrit, Iraq. Staff Sgt, Dean was assigned to the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

The Department of Defense is investigating his death.

The group icasualties.org reports 4,211 U.S. deaths in Iraq, including 522 from Alabama, since the war began in March 2003.
