»  Comments | Post a Comment

Alabama is facing a crisis level of premature births that's driving up healthcare costs and special education budgets. That's according to a recent report from the March of Dimes.

The national cost of pre-term births is about $26 billion a year. The average hospital stay for a preemie is 49 days at a cost of about $50,000.
And prematurity is the number one cause of death in the first month of life.

Nbc13 HD’s Lisa Crane takes an in-depth look at how Birmingham doctors are dealing with the situation in her Fact Finder report.
