Hundreds, if not thousands, of Hurricane Gustav evacuees have arrived in Birmingham. Mayor Larry Langford told NBC 13 HD News late this morning that as many as 7,000 evacuees may eventually find shelter in Birmingham.
As of late Sunday morning, the floor of the Boutwell Auditorium was filling with evacuees. Cots were lined up on the floor of the facility. People were sitting in the seats on the mezzanine level surrounding the floor of Boutwell.
Other facilities like Bartow Arena at UAB and the Fair Park arena, as well as some area churches, have been designated to house hurricane evacuees from New Orleans and the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coasts, as well.
The Red Cross also has shelters opening in Tuscaloosa, Gadsden and Anniston.
