Judge Scott Vowell today denied Jefferson County Commissioner George Bowman's request for an extension to get valid signatures to qualify for the November 4th ballot.

Bowman needed 914 vaild signatures to get his name on the ballot. He had submitted 1628 signatures earlier this week but the registrars’ office ruled that only 846 of them were valid.

Bowman was appointed to the commission seat by Governor Bob Riley after the position was left vacant by Larry Langford who was voted in as the mayor of Birmingham. Although William Bell won a special election, it was ruled invalid by the courts which said the governor had the right to appoint Bowman to that position until the next regular scheduled election.

In his ruling today Judge Vowell said it's clear Commissioner Bowman did not meet the Wednesday deadline to get enough valid signatures to get his name on the ballot.
