TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Don't look for a big drop in gasoline prices in Alabama in 2008.
An expert in chemical and biological engineering at the University of Alabama says gas will remain above $2.50 a gallon in the coming year.
Associate professor Peter Clark says gas might not be as expensive in 2008 as it has been this year. But he doesn't see any big decrease in prices. He attributes the high prices to the weak dollar, robust demand and instability in the oil-producing regions.
Clark expects prices at the pump to remain above $2.50 a gallon early next year. He says they may rise over $3 a gallon again in the spring because of supply shortfalls.
Clark says conservation of gasoline may be the only thing that will lead to a reduction in gasoline prices. He says prices would drop significantly if consumers would reduce demand by just five percent.
