Birmingham, Ala. -- Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford took 71 city-owned vehicles out of service last week in an effort to save city money and build revenue.
The vehicles constituted over 10 percent of the city’s personnel carrier fleet. Langford asked all city departments to stop use of vehicles which receive little or no time on the road. Langford also pulled some ‘take home’ cars and trucks from city employees.
At least 30 of the newest cars turned back into the city by the various departments will be quickly re-distributed to the city’s police department in an effort to improve the city’s enforcement capabilities.
