WASHINGTON (AP) - For the first time in nearly three decades, a federal nutrition program for low-income mothers and children is being revised.
The Women, Infants and Children program is placing more emphasis on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and cutting back on dairy and egg products.
The Agriculture Department says the changes being adopted today better reflect the needs of more than eight million low-income mothers and children in the WIC program.
The revisions have pleased anti-hunger advocates but disappointed milk and egg producers, who will see sales of their
products reduced. The WIC program will cut back on purchases of milk, cheese, eggs and juice.
