BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Samford University officials announced today that they will begin offering the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree next year to meet a need for advanced practice nurses.

The Ida V- Moffett School of Nursing at Samford will be the second in Alabama to offer the new degree. A program is already in place at the University of South Alabama.

Samford's program will begin in June and graduate its first class in 2009.

Samford nursing dean Doctor Nena Sanders says qualified students will be able to complete the new degree within one calendar year of full-time study.
