OMAHA, NE: Omaha police say a 20-year-old man was the gunman who killed 8 people, then himself at a local mall Wednesday. Five other people are injured. Witnesses say the gunman fired down on people from a third floor balcony. A woman who knew the suspected shooter says he was a troubled man, had just broken up with his girlfriend, and was recently fired from his job in fast food.
There is an Alabama connection to the shootings in Omaha. "General Growth Properties"- the same company that owns the Westroads mall in Omaha owns the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover. Mall officials tell NBC13 HD news that security officers had a meeting Wednesday night, but some shoppers say extra security doesn't mean extra comfort.
"We avoid the Galleria most of the time," says shopper Vicki Bearden.
"I did see a lot more police and security people," says another shopper Becky Goodwin.
The Galleria is not the only mall stepping up security. Homewood Police are increasing their presence at the Brookwood mall. Most shoppers we talked to say they will not depend on officers but are taking accountability for their personal safety.
Police investigating the shootings in Omaha say the suspected shooter left a suicide note that said quote "sorry for everything," would not be a burden on his family anymore and "now I'll be famous."
