In less than a month people who shop in Birmingham can expect to pay more, thanks to an approved penny sales tax increase.
Tuesday the Birmingham city council passed Mayor Larry Langford’s multi-million dollar finance plan.
That means, the city's sales tax will go up by 1 cent bringing the area sales tax to ten cents on the dollar.
Also, business license fees will double.
The changes start January 1, 2008.
Bettina this puts Birmingham at the highest sales tax in the area.
That's right and folks will feel the penny increase when they shop at areas like the Summit.
On Tuesday city council passed Mayor Langford's multi-million dollar finance plan for city projects. Overall the plan includes that penny sales tax increase and an increase in business license fees.
With the increases, the city expects business license fees will rake in 19-million dollars a year earmarked for a domed stadium and millions more for transit. As for the one cent sales tax increase, that's expected to bring in up 40-million dollars a year, for public safety, street paving, and a possible student scholarship program if approved by the public.
Though the money is slated to improve the city the approval has cause mixed reaction among those who will pay.
