JEFFERSON COUNTY: Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies say a 12 year old student brought a loaded handgun to McAdory Middle School Tuesday. Investigators tell NBC13 HD news another student spotted the gun and notified school administrators.
Parents we spoke with seemed surprised. Some of them didn't even know about the incident until we asked them about it.
"Every parent hopes something like this never happens at their child's school," says mother Susan Bush. Bush's daughter attends McAdory Middle School. "The best thing I think you can do is kneel down and pray with your children before they go to school."
Investigators believe the .38 caliber revolver was located in a school binder along with 2 knives. Authorities believe the student got the weapon out of his home without his parent's knowing about it.
"We have conflicting reports of why he may have taken the gun to school," says Randy Christian, of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. "There's at least one report he may have been expecting a fight with another student. Who knows if he was planning to defend himself or scare the other student."
McAdory school officials would not comment on this situation. A school resource officer did manage to get control of the gun, parents say these days a lot more needs to be done to keep their kids safe.
"Anybody could've gotten hurt and I got two kids that go here and I don't like it at all," says parent Latricia Smith. "I hope they get some metal detectors or do something so this won't happen again."
