So far the Central Alabama Better Business Bureau hasn't had any reports of high profile schemes to steal your holiday money - but that doesn't mean they're not out there, shoppers still need to be careful.
David Smitherman/CEO & PRESIDENT, Central Alabama Better Business Bureau said, "It's a busy, busy time for all consumers, and a time where people need to be careful."
According to bankrate.com - the old favorites are still out there.
Name your favorite star is one of them. Theives will take 54 of your dollars and deliver a certificate to you. However, only the International Astronomical Union can name stars, and they're not selling.
Other schemes include unsolicited email, online auctions and bogus charities.
David Smitherman said, "we do see a number of charitable scams this year, because people are in the mood to give."
Smitherman recommends checking out charities before giving through http://wisegivingalliance.org.
For those of you shopping online this year, you have some work to do too.
David Smitherman said, "it's very important to understand what you're buying, what the return policies are, who you're buying from and be very cautious about the website that you're on before you begin giving out credit card numbers."
Just remember when online shopping ... make sure it's a secure site and look for the BBB online seal.
David Smitherman said, "for those vendors, they have agreed to adhere to all the ethical standards of the better business bureau and they have a reliability report with their local BBB."
Here are some more tips for those of you shopping at your local mall or big boxes:
Smitherman recommends you leave the majority of your credit cards at home, only take what you need.
Leave your social security card at home too.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Be sure to keep your car doors locked and put your bags in your trunk or at least hidden from view.
