The Domestic Violence Court hears approximately 250 cases per month. Thanks to Voices against Violence, Alabama Civil Justice Foundation, The Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham, The YWCA, The City of Birmingham Police Department, The Birmingham City Council and the female lawyers of Birmingham, the City of Birmingham now has a domestic violence court that holds perpetrators accountable.
Cases are actually being heard and victims are appearing in court to testify. Some cases are being prosecuted without the help of victims because police reports include information of other possible witnesses.
Once, witnesses from Montgomery who had witnessed the abuse in Birmingham appeared in court and testified. The victim in this case was denying the whole incident.
Because of these concerned witnesses, the defendant was convicted. The community's response to this dreadful reality can make a real difference.
