Rod Carter talks to Bert Gaddis, DVM about the signs and treatment of pets having seizures on NBC13 HD News at Midday.

Watching your dog or cat have a seizure can be frightening, and make a pet owner feel helpless. There are different types of seizures. Not all are dangerous, but some do require immediate medical attention.

Types: Grand Mal vs. Petite Mal
Grand Mal: Serious, can be life-threatening
Petite Mal: No loss of conciousness, sometimes you aren't even aware they're happening

Causes:
Low blood sugar
Electrolyte imbalance
Liver problems
Slug baits ingested by the animal
Cancer
Viral/bacterial infections

Diagnosis:
Bloodwork
MRI
EEG

Treatment:
If emergency, I-V meds
Later oral meds
