I’ve worked in television for 33 years, 29 of them here in Birmingham. It’s always been generally fun. Fun and work don’t always go together, but it sure is better when their paths cross.

It’s the most fun when you feel like you’re not wasting your viewer’s time. It’s the most fun when you feel you’re putting on a good product, a product worth the effort. Such has been the case here lately. Here lately I was able to visit Washington, D.C., with 35 World War II veterans from our area. We just finished airing a three-part series about those veterans and their memorial which is situated between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. It seems a fitting place to honor the warriors who saved Western Democracy. If you didn’t get a chance to see the stories, and would like to, you can see them here on our web site. Just type in the keyword: Spirit of Alabama.

And, now I’m working on stories about cancer. I hate cancer, always have, but hate it more after it took my mom’s life far too soon. I don’t know when or how we’ll finally whip this terrible disease, but we will. And, the one thing we can do is figure out ways to raise dollars for cancer research.

NBC 13 HD is proud to be a part of Stand Up To Cancer. The three major networks — NBC, ABC and CBS — will team up for a nationwide fund raiser for cancer research on Friday night Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. Just prior to the network broadcast, the three major news stations here in Birmingham will combine our efforts to do a 30-minute broadcast about cancer research and awareness. I’ll be honored to work with Brenda Ladun from ABC 33/40 and Sherri Jackson from CBS 42 on that broadcast. We compete for news and news viewers all year, but we’ll work together on this effort. What better cause for us to team up on? I don’t know how much good we’ll do, but we’ll make a statement that some things are more important than the daily norm of work and competition. The special broadcast will be seen on all three stations that night, and we’ll all air the network special which will be hosted by Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charlie Williams.

The networks and our local stations have never teamed up like this before. I’m glad we are and hope we make a difference. When we do, this world of broadcasting is a more fun place to be. I hope you’ll watch.

See you tonight at 4:30, 5, 6 and 10 p.m.
