Just when I thought my home couldn't be any more crowded, I went and got myself another dog. And not just any dog, mind you....a 100 lb dog. We already have a 5 lb yorkie that my son is waaaaaay too rough with. So I started thinking several months ago that we needed a bigger, sturdier, more family-like dog. After much internet research, I was convinced a golden retriever or a great pyrenees was exactly what we needed. They're both very family/kid friendly. But the Pyr won me over after hearing time and time again how laid back they are. I definitely did not want a hyper dog, since my house is already hectic enough. So, I got in touch with some rescue groups and found a beautiful 2 year old female great pyrenees in White Plains, Kentucky that had a sad story of abandonment. Apparently, her owner had dumped her and her male companion in Indiana. They roamed on their own for several months before being picked up by animal control. When authorities recognized the two as "pure breeds" they called the rescue group. Thats where the two have been since April. I went to Kentucky to check her out before I committed. I wanted to see how she acted around my son. No self respecting mom would just bring home any huge animal that could potentially bite a limb off if it so wished without some thorough checking, right? And just as I had heard, she was a tame as can be imagined...letting my son hang and pull on her as much as he wished. I went back to White Plains to pick her up last weekend all by myself. I laid the seats down in the back of my suv and made her a nice soft bed, but this 100 lb baby really just wanted to sit in my lap as I drove. Once she realized that was impossible, she settled down nicely and we made the 3 hour drive with no big problems.
She's been with us now for almost a week and I keep thinking she'll soon come out of her shell. But perhaps this is her personality. She's so docile, she's bordering on comatose. Which is fine for our family. So our home is a lot more crowded with this new addition, but much more interesting!
